Shops, cafes, restaurants and homes aim to re-energise the streets and strengthen communities

Plans have been approved to redevelop former department store Beatties which architects say will "re-energise" the streets of Wolverhampton.

Shops, restaurants and cafes are to be built on the site along with more than 300 homes under the proposals.

Corstorphine and Wright said the development would provide much-needed housing and support the return of retail in Wolverhampton.

"We’re incredibly excited to breathe new life back into Beatties," architect associate Rebecca Platt said.

City of Wolverhampton Council approved the plans by applicant Eden Property Group which it said would improve the economic and social conditions of the area.

The building in Victoria Street was sold to the company for £6.15m after it was left empty in 2020.

Historical features of the building will be kept as part of the plans

A phasing plan setting out progress of the works will be submitted within two months, along with an employment strategy to maximise job and training opportunities.

Historical features of the building would be preserved during the development, while improvements are promised to the building's energy performance.

“Britain’s department stores now present an opportunity to rethink our cities and town centres nationwide.

"These buildings are typically well-constructed, recognisable, and hold significant local importance," the architecture company said.

The proposals aim to respect the history of the building, re-energise the streets of Wolverhampton and strengthen communities.
