Leaders at a mosque in Bradford have called for "safety and peace" after a 14-year-old boy suffered a head injury in an axe attack.

The teenager was assaulted on Athol Road in the Manningham area of Bradford at around 16:00 BST on Tuesday, West Yorkshire Police said.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and has been bailed pending further inquiries.

In a letter sent to local residents, Shaykh Wajid Iqbal of the Victor Street Mosque said: "It is essential that we stand united against violence and work towards creating a safe environment for all."

'Deeply concerned'

Meanwhile, Zenub Mahmood, chair of the Lister Community Action Group, said she was "deeply concerned about the impact on residents".

She added: "Our thoughts are with those affected and we stand in solidarity with the community during this difficult time."

Councillor Shabir Hussain of Bradford Council added: "It is crucial that we look after one another during these difficult times."

Det Insp Majahid Ashruff said: "This appears to have been an isolated incident and inquiries are continuing to understand the circumstances of what has taken place.

"I would ask anyone who was in the area and has seen or heard anything that could help with our investigation to please contact us."
