Fire breaks out in roof space above terraced shops

A large plume of smoke rose into the sky during the fire in Brackens Lane, Alvaston

An investigation is set to be carried out to establish the cause of a fire in the roof space above a row of terraced shops in Derby.

Six fire engines from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, an aerial ladder, control unit and water carrier were called to the fire in Brackens Lane, Alvaston, at 13:13 BST on Monday.

The blaze sent a large plume of smoke into the sky and people living in the area were advised to keep their doors and windows closed.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said at about 17:15 that the fire had been brought under control, but Brackens Lane was expected to remain closed "for some time".

Six fire crews and support vehicles were called to the fire above the row of shops in Alvaston

A fire service spokesperson said: "Firefighters remain on scene damping down following a fire involving the roof space of a row of terraced properties on Brackens Lane in Alvaston.

"The road is expected to remain closed for some time. Please continue to avoid the area. An investigation into the cause of the fire will commence in due course."
