Jason O'Hanlon's family said they were heartbroken at his sudden loss

A man who died after a crash involving a car and an e-bike was "a cherished father, partner, son, brother and friend", his family said.

Cyclist Jason O'Hanlon, 46, was seriously injured in the collision on Purwell Lane, Hitchin, Hertfordshire, on 13 October. He died in hospital on 17 October.

The British Transport Police (BTP) referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) because it had had an "interaction" with the cyclist before the crash.

The watchdog has handed the investigation back to Hertfordshire Police. Insp Craig Wheeler appealed for information, CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident.

The IOPC said the cyclist was asked to stop by a BTP officer, but did a U-turn and rode off.

The BTP driver turned the car around and followed the cyclist, who was later involved in the crash with a white BMW X6, towards the junction of Willian Road at about 14:00 BST.

Mr O'Hanlon's family expressed their gratitude to the emergency services and medical teams who did everything they could to help save him, and to their family and friends for their overwhelming support.

"We are heartbroken at the loss of the man so many loved," they said.

"Losing Jason in such a sudden and devastating way has left a hole that can never be filled."

Insp Wheeler, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit, said inquiries were ongoing.
