Tributes paid after cyclist dies in road collision

A cyclist has died following a road collision and a woman has been arrested, police have said.

The man in his 70s, who was named by his running, external and cycling clubs, external as Arthur Whiston, was involved in a fatal crash in Argents Lane near West Bergholt at about 12:20 BST on Friday.

Essex Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene and his family was being supported.

A 69-year-old woman from Colchester has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

She has been released under investigation while police carry out further inquiries.

In a social media post, external, Colchester Cycling Campaign paid tribute to Mr Whiston.

It said: "All of our thoughts are with Arthur's family, friends and the running community in which he was such an active participant."

Mr Whiston's running club, external said: "It’s with complete devastation that we are finding out that one of the members of Running Colchester has sadly passed away.

"Arthur Whiston, you will be missed by so many."

A minute's applause, external was also held for Mr Whiston at a junior Parkrun in Colchester, where he would often marshal races.

Essex Police has appealed for witnesses and any video or dashcam footage that could help in the investigation.
