A man who raped a young girl when he was teenager has been jailed for four years.
John Angus, now 50, was aged between 16 and 18 when he sexually abused a girl, who was as young as eight-years-old, Newcastle Crown Court heard.
Judge Carolyn Scott said the victim had suffered "severe psychological" harm and had been "robbed of a happier life" by Angus.
Angus, of Horsley Avenue in Shiremoor, North Tyneside, admitted multiple counts of indecent assault, offences which if committed today would be classed as rape and sexual assault of a child.
The victim said she had only felt comfortable revealing the abuse after receiving counselling years later, the court heard.
