A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after three people were injured in a city centre.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said it was called at 12:48 BST on Sunday to reports of a man threatening people with a knife on Empress Road in the Bevois Valley area of Southampton.

A man in his 40s, from the Bitterne area of the city, was detained at the scene.

No-one was seriously injured, the force said.

The man reported to be holding a knife was described as South Asian, aged in his 40s, about 5ft 11ins and with black hair and a beard. He was wearing a red shirt and a navy blue jacket.

Police have asked witnesses or anyone who saw the man described to contact them.

The force said it did not believe there was any wider risk to the public.
