Plans to convert former bank into visitor hub

Barclays Bank closed its branch in Castletown in February last year

Plans to convert a registered building in the Isle of Man's ancient capital into a retail unit, visitor hub and office space have been submitted.
The proposals lodged by Manx National Heritage (MNH) to refurbish 1 Market Square in Castletown, which housed Barclays branch up until February last year.
The plans would see a retail unit and visitor hub for information and tickets to MNH sites on the ground floor, with the first floor used as open plan office space for up to 10 people.
MNH chief executive Connie Lovel said the refurbishment of the site, which is adjacent to Castle Rushen would "create a welcoming space to showcase the significance of the island's heritage".
During quieter months, the space would be used for small-scale events, including workshops showcasing local producers, MNH said.
Originally built as an open market with ground floor arches onto the square, the site was later enclosed to form a bank, and in recent years was used as a branch for Isle of Man Bank before Barclays took over the space.
The organisation, which runs 16 heritage sites across the island, has confirmed the project is not being funded using its annual grant from the government.
Subject to planning approval, MNH said work was expected to begin later this year.
Chairman of Castletown Commissioners Tony Brown told the Local Democracy Reporting Service the local authority was "delighted" that the heritage body was investing in the town.
He said the plans would enhance the facilities available to residents and tourists.
"We can all work together to make Castletown a more attractive place," he added.
