Plans to convert a former office building in Mansfield into a school for children unable to attend mainstream education have been approved.

Phoenix ND Education applied to turn the empty office in Southwell Road West into a school for up to 15 pupils.

It would be staffed by teachers, pastoral care workers and support staff, according to planning documents.

The plans, approved by Mansfield District Council, stated there was a "clear and growing" need for alternative school provision in the area, with increasing numbers of young people struggling to access mainstream education.

The school would be for young people between the ages of 11 and 18 and places would not be funded by the council or local schools.

A report submitted by the applicant said: "By providing a dedicated educational environment for these individuals, the proposed school will support their social, emotional, and academic development.

"This provision will help to address the gaps in the local education system, ensuring that all young people have access to the education they need to succeed."
