Officers joked that a takeaway delivery rider had taken fast food "to the extreme" after he was spotted riding an e-bike on a busy motorway.
The man was seen on the M1 northbound carriageway in Leicestershire at about 17:50 GMT on Tuesday, National Highways said.
Leicestershire Police said it was called to the hard shoulder at junction 23 and escorted the man away.
The force's North West Leicestershire safer neighbourhood team said the rider was then made aware he was in "wheel trouble" and issued with a traffic offence report.
