'Test of strength' as Starmer to meet Trump over Ukraine

The Daily Telegraph focuses on the lack of agreement at the Paris summit on the creation of a European peacekeeping force in Ukraine, highlighting the splits that emerged over the issue. With Germany, Poland and Spain all signalling reluctance to send troops, Britain, France and Sweden spoke in favour, hoping to put pressure on European allies to step up their support for Kyiv. A UK government source said it was no surprise that different nations held different views about deploying troops.

UK defence officials tell the Guardian that even a peacekeeping force of 30,000, away from the front line, would need significant Nato support - especially from the US. The paper notes that the summit was never intended to reach a definitive decision on the issue but that consensus had been noticeable on the need to increase defence spending.

The Times speculates that the UK might be willing to send 20,000 troops, about a quarter of the British Army, as part of a peacekeeping force but it says other nations would also need to take part if President Volodymyr Zelensky is correct in his estimate that a credible force would need to be 110,000 strong.

For the Daily Mirror, whether or not the US walks away from guaranteeing a peace in Ukraine is - as its headline says - a "Test of Strength" between Donald Trump and Sir Keir Starmer. The prime minister has insisted that Ukraine be allowed at the US-Russian peace talks on its own future.

The Daily Express says a survey by Age UK suggests that three out of four pensioners were left shivering in cold homes last month after the government cut most winter fuel payments. The charity will petition the government today to restore the payments or introduce alternative measures. Ministers said they were committed to supporting pensioners.

The Times has more details of the government's independent report on prison sentencing in England and Wales. It concludes that Britain's jails are now on the brink of collapse because of ill-conceived ministerial attempts to show they are tough on crime. The report finds that the length of prison sentences has increased by 40% since 1993. Then, the average custodial sentence for indictable offences was 16 months, whereas now it is 22 and a half months.

The Daily Mail says the Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch, declared war on what it calls woke ideology during her speech yesterday to the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship Conference. She told the three-day gathering that the very fabric of Western civilisation had to be defended.

According to the Daily Telegraph, a study by Harvard University suggests that Gen Z and millennials are more likely than other age groups to throw food away before it's necessary. After looking at the habits of 2,000 people, researchers found that the younger generation was most reliant on "best before" dates rather than relying on a sniff test to see if food was still edible. The study found that older people were better at just using their judgement.
