Heavy rain and strong winds have led to the cancellation of the second day of qualifying for the 2024 Manx Grand Prix, following the death of a rider on day one.

Race organisers said the weather was forecast to “deteriorate significantly” as the afternoon progressed into the evening, leading to Monday’s practice laps being scrapped.

The conditions were set to include heavy rain and winds of up to 50mph (80km/h). The cancellation means roads around the 37.73-mile (60km) Mountain Course will not close as scheduled at 18:00 BST.

Irish rider Louis O'Regan died on Sunday after a crash during the opening qualifying session, which not restarted.

The red flag incident was near the end of the session, with organisers later confirming the death of Mr O'Regan following the crash at Kate's Cottage.

Qualifying for the event is set to continue in the evenings until Thursday, with racing set to begin on Friday.

As well as the scheduled practice sessions between 18:00 and 21:00 on Wednesday and Thursday, the clerk of the course can utilise contingency daytime closures between 12:30 and 16:30 if necessary.

An update on Tuesday’s schedule is set to be issued at 09:00 BST, organisers said.
