Overnight closures for power station road repairs

The road is the main route to Hinkley Point C for workers and for transporting materials.

One of the key roads between a new nuclear power station and a nearby town will be closed in stages overnight for resurfacing over the next month.

Hinkley Point Road (also known as Rodway) runs from the Hinkley Point C complex in Somerset to the village of Cannington, five miles away.

The road is the main route for workers on the site and for transporting construction parts to the power station.

Somerset Council announced the closures last Wednesday, saying the nightly work taking place between 19:00 BST and 05:00 BST would "safeguard the lifespan of the road."

Somerset Council said homes and businesses will remain accessible overnight throughout the closures.

The work is expected to be carried out in three phases, the Local Democracy Reporting Service reports:

• September 23-October 6: Wick Lane to Cock Lane.

• October 7-13: Wick Lane to Hinkley Point C site entrance.

• October 14-26: a series of short sections between Monk Lane and the Cannington roundabout.

Somerset Council has said residents and businesses on Hinkley Point Road will still have access.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, portfolio holder for transport and waste services, said:

“We have worked closely with the team at Hinkley Point C to ensure the scheme is delivered as quickly as possible to minimise disruption for residents on the route and the plant traffic.”
