A controlled explosion was carried out after a smoke grenade was found in the river.

Northamptonshire Police were called at 11:50 BST on Saturday to reports of a suspicious item in the River Nene in Wellingborough.

Bomb experts assessed the device, and a controlled explosion was carried out in a field alongside the embankment. Nearby roads have now reopened.

A police spokesperson said: "We understand this will have caused concern to some and we thank everyone for their patience and support while we responded to this incident."
