Your photos: Autumn leaves in the West Midlands

If you think the colour of autumn leaves appear to be rather striking this year, you might be right.

It does seem the cool and wet months we have had are leading to a longer display of leaves at this time of the year.

National Trust horticulturalist, Pamela Smith, from Birmingham, said: "I've noticed a lot of street trees are still holding on to their leaves a little longer than normal, so the dog walks aren't quite as leafy," she said.

"We've had a really wet spring and we're probably going to end up with a compressed autumn... probably seeing many colours all at the same time."

She explained it was "not a case of waiting for the colour to come", however, but "a case of colour disappearing".

She said: "It's the green pigment of chlorophyll that will disappear when we get the frost, and underneath are all those colours that have been there all year round," Ms Smith explained.
