A supermarket car park in North Yorkshire was evacuated after a member of the public was found to have a suspected unexploded World War Two device in their car.

North Yorkshire Police said the person discovered the item while clearing out a relative's home and transported it to a police station in Ripon, where they parked near the Aldi on Stonebridgegate.

The device was taken away by the Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to be safely disposed of elsewhere, officers said.

The car park and supermarket were closed at about 14:30 BST on Monday and reopened later.

A force spokesperson said a cordon had been put in place as a precaution to protect members of the public.

They added: "If you come across something that you think may be an explosive device such a bomb, shell, mortar or marine flare do not touch it, leave the item where it is - even if it looks old and rusty - as it may still contain explosives and is therefore potentially dangerous.

"Move at least 164ft (50m) away and call the police on 101."
