Stonemasons have "renovated and restored" a Guernsey war memorial.

Guernsey Memorial Masons and Vaudin Stonemasons worked together to complete the work on the Vale War Memorial.

The Vale Parish commissioned the £12,000 clean-up to remove a build-up of lichen and other growth.

The renovation included cleaning the granite obelisk's main inscription and regilding it in gold leaf, outlined with black enamel.

'Beautiful memorial'

Other inscriptions were also cleaned and repainted in black by Monumental Masons Simon and Dan Goodwin, who are father and son.

A spokesman for Vaudin Stonemasons said: "The beautiful memorial was cleaned of organic matter and dirt but not mechanically cleaned so the weathered finish was undisturbed."

The Vale War Memorial was erected after the 1914-18 conflict to commemorate those residents of the Vale who died in the Great War. More names were added in 1945 after the Second World War.

'Respectful'

Vice Dean Bill Cohu, who instigated the work, said the memorial itself was showing "signs of staining and weathering".

He said: "It just seemed right and respectful to their memories that we looked at how best to maintain this historic monument."
