Walkers and cyclists have been warned not to ignore closure signs in an area still affected by a huge moor fire.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (NYFRS) said it had received reports at the weekend of people by-passing the closure signs on Langdale Moor, and entering areas where fire crews and contractors were still working.

The service said the landscape remained extremely hazardous, with an ongoing risk of flare-ups - and warned people not to walk or cycle in areas damaged by fire.

NYFRS said: "We ask that people follow the guidance and closures for their safety and the safety of those working at the scene."

An investigation began last week into the cause of the fire which started near RAF Fylingdales, on the North Yorks Moors, on 11 August and, at its height, covered nearly 10 sq miles (25 sq km).

NYFRS said while the fire was "currently contained" the landscape remained "highly vulnerable" and changing winds, along with the deep-seated burning and remaining heat, continued to cause flare-ups.

The fire service said it remained at the scene and continued to monitor the site and weather conditions with Forestry England.

It said there had been no further major flare-ups in the forestry area on Sunday, but work continued in some areas to drench the ground and target hotspots.

The North York Moors National Park Authority said open access to Fylingdales Moor had been suspended for three months, while details of the cycle and walking route diversions could be found on the park's website, external.

The authority stressed that the vast majority of the North York Moors National Park "could be enjoyed safely", with businesses open as usual.
