The demolition of a derelict venue in Derby city centre has been postponed.

The Assembly Rooms, which has been unused for 10 years following a fire, was due to be knocked down in "late autumn” this year.

Derby City Council said its regeneration scrutiny board was in favour of the plans to demolish the building but questions were raised last week about the length of time the site would be vacant and when funding for a new scheme would be confirmed.

Nadine Peatfield, leader of authority, has now decided to postpone the work so the demolition and subsequent construction work can take place consecutively, instead of the site standing vacant.

'Opportunity to reflect'

She said: "I understand that this may be disconcerting for our residents and partners who are keen to see visible progress.

"But please be reassured that we’re confident in our proposals for the site and are committed to transforming our city centre into a vibrant and welcoming place with culture at its heart."

Peatfield said pausing the demolition also "gives us an opportunity to reflect on recent events to our cultural partners".

"We have seen Deda go into administration, Quad reducing their opening hours, the museums struggling so what goes into that space is going to be even more important than ever," she added.

Plans for the site so far include a four-star hotel and office space, which Peatfield said were progressing "at pace".

She said there were "various different options" for the public aspect of the building.

"I am prepared to give this more time to get it right," she said.

The council said it was still in consultation with partners so cannot comment on timings for the works.
