A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was attacked following a disturbance at a Lewisham pub.

The Met Police was called to reports of an assault in Lewisham High Street at about 20:30 GMT on 1 March where a man was found with life-threatening injuries. He later died in hospital.

Police said they believed the 63-year-old was assaulted after a disturbance at The Watch House pub and confirmed that no weapons were involved.

The suspect remains in custody and police have appealed for witnesses.

The man's family have been informed of his death.

"We would like to hear from anyone who was in Lewisham High Street or at The Watch House pub and has information about what happened.

"We have spent the night at the scene and there will be an increased police presence in the area today while we continue to gather evidence."

Police believe there is no risk to the wider community based on the enquiries carried out so far.
