A march and vigil is being held in Hull on Saturday to highlight violence and abuse against women and girls.

The Say Her Name campaign will light candles and remember those killed by men over the last six months.

A recent survey by the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) found that 82.5% of the women surveyed reported being subjected to "multiple acts of violence and abuse" during childhood.

One of the march organisers, Vicky Foster, said the idea was about "challenging unacceptable behaviour".

"It’s all too easy to look the other way," she said.

"Catcalling, unwanted touching, speaking to women in unacceptable ways.

"It feeds into the climate that allows worse things to happen."

A related exhibition is also being held at the Humber Street Gallery in the city's marina.

The works by local artist Annabel McCourt features portraits of people holding a neon sign saying "I'm Sorry".

Ms McCourt said the apologies were a "powerful tool for forgiveness and healing".

"It is introspection for the collective good to create a more compassionate world," she said.

The report from the PCC said 33% of girls surveyed Hull, East Yorkshire, North and North East Lincolnshire had received death threats before they reached 18.

The study also found, external that up to 91% of the incidents of violence and coercive behaviour directed against girls went unreported.

The report added that "across all types of violence in both adulthood and childhood, most perpetrators were male".

The march starts at the Humber Street Gallery at 11:00 GMT on Saturday.
