A seaside resort is preparing for an invasion of giant inflatable monsters to "disrupt skylines" in the town.

The Monster Hunt between 28 October and 3 November will be one of the highlights of Blackpool's Halloween By The Sea celebrations.

The quirky monsters will form a spectacular, family-friendly trail on rooftops on the Golden Mile and in part of the town centre and will be lit up during the evening alongside Blackpool's famous Illuminations.

The monsters have been created by Designs in Air, who have provided giant inflatables for Glastonbury, Cirque du Soleil and New York Aquarium.

One of their design artists, Filthy Luker, said: "Our motive is to make the world a softer, more surreal and colourful place as a kind of vendetta against the mundane, concrete world we live in."

"With the element of surprise as a shock tactic, our giant pop-up artworks spice up the norm and disrupt skylines.

"They are instantly seen and enjoyed by everyone who passes by – it might not be high art, but it is definitely high up art!"

There will be a Monster Hunt map to either download or collect at the Tourist Information Centre opposite Blackpool Tower.

The free Monster Hunt is fully funded and supported by the government's Shared Prosperity Fund.

Other events in the Halloween By The Sea programme include:

  • Journey to Hell at Pleasure Beach Resort

  • Pumpkin Festival at Ridgeway Farm

  • Halloween Tails at Peter Rabbit Explore & Play

  • Circus of Horrors at The Globe

  • Sweeney Todd at Winter Gardens

  • A spooky Halloween projection on the Tower building

Last year, Blackpool featured an inflatable artwork by Designs in Air on Blackpool Tower called Invasion as part of the Lightpool Festival.
