Conservatives complete council ward clean sweep

The Conservatives have completed a clean sweep of seats in a ward on Scottish Borders Council.

Candidate John Bathgate won a by-election held on Thursday to join Scott Hamilton and Sandy Scott in representing Jedburgh and District.

The area also has a Conservative MSP Rachael Hamilton and a Conservative MP John Lamont.

The council vote took place following the resignation of the SNP's Pam Brown.

Mr Bathgate won the seat with more than 50% of the vote in a turnout of 32.8%.

The full result was:

  • John Bathgate (Con) 1,377 votes

  • Phil Dixon (SNP) 410

  • Kaymarie Hughes (Lab) 241

  • Ray Georgeson (Lib Dem) 166

  • Charles Strang (Scottish Greens) 135

  • James Clark (Scottish Eco-Federalists) 25

The count took place at council headquarters in Newtown St Boswells.
