Drivers caught by CCTV car given thousands of fines

Thousands of fines have been given to drivers after a car with a number plate recognition camera caught them breaking road rules.
The CCTV enforcement vehicle snapped more than 10,000 motorists in Reading, Berkshire, violating traffic laws between 2022 and 2023.
The borough council's white Peugeot caught 9,659 cars illegally parked along the town's red route.
First introduced in 2018, the route bans parking at any time in an effort to speed up bus journeys.
Fines were also issued for parking at bus stops and School Keep Clear road markings, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The number of fines issued was about 2,000 fewer than the previous year, figures showed.
Those who are caught are given a £70 fine, which drops to £35 if paid within 21 days.
