Busy traffic bridge to close for a week

A road bridge in Gloucester is set to close for a week so repairs can be carried out.

The High Orchard bridge, which takes St Ann Way over the Gloucester and Sharpness canal, will be closed to vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians from 06.00 ST on Monday 6 May until 13 May.

The bridge cannot be lifted until repairs have been completed on cracks that were discovered in March during an inspection.

Tall ships will also unable to pass underneath the bridge until the work has finished.

Last month the crew of the Bessie Ellen brought in a crane to help take down all of the masts and rigging, so the ship could sail underneath.

It was put back together the other side of the bridge so the ship could begin an around Britain tour.

Diversions will be in place, and the closure includes cyclists and pedestrians.

The official diversion is via the A430 Castle Meads Way, St Oswalds Road, Gouda Way, Black Dog Way, Bruton Way and Trier Way.
