A Victorian clock tower that stands over a museum devoted to the Industrial Revolution is in need of repair, bosses say.

Investigations uncovered "significant signs of rotting" in the structure, on top of the Museum of Iron in Ironbridge.

The clock was installed in 1843 on what was then a warehouse in the Ironbridge Gorge.

An application has been made by the Ironbridge Gorge Museums Trust to carry out work to repair the damage.

It has proposed dismantling the pierced panel and replacing the existing polycarbonate sheets with 6mm toughened glass in a stainless steel frame.

Further repairs would include replacing the base of the clock tower with a new lead roof covering.

It has told Telford and Wrekin Council "the scale of the repairs and redecorations are sympathetic" and are essential to preserve a listed building.

This news was gathered by the Local Democracy Reporting Service which covers councils and other public service organisations.
