New homes could be built on the site of an old quarry on the outskirts of a town centre.

Plans to build eight detached and semi-detached houses on the land in Blackburn, Lancashire, have been submitted to Blackburn with Darwen Council.

Applicant Mohammed Shafi, of One 7 GRP, said he wanted to build the detached and semi-detached houses on land at the corner of Harcourt Road and Cheltenham Road in Wensley Fold.

He said the site was a former quarry which had been walled around, presumably for safety reasons, as the area around it was developed for housing from the later-19th to early-20th centuries.

Mr Shafi said there were no surviving buildings on the site, although a wrought steel archway saying Harcourt Garages remained, thought to date back to when the garage complex was on site in the 1960s.

Access to the site would be via Harcourt Road, with pedestrian access created by blocking the other vehicular access off Croydon Street, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

"The existing pedestrian access off Cheltenham Road will be blocked," the application said.
