Highland-based engineering company Global Energy Group says it has made inquiries about taking over Harland and Wolff's Arnish fabrication yard in Lewis.
Belfast-based shipbuilder Harland & Wolff is preparing to go into administration for the second time in five years.
Arnish is one of the largest employers in Lewis with a workforce of about 150 people.
The yard recently won a contract to build subsea structures for the oil and gas industry.
Global Energy Group operates the Nigg fabrication yard in the Highlands.
The company is headed up by businessman and Ross County FC chairman Roy MacGregor.
A spokesperson said: "Global Energy Group have made initial inquiries into the Arnish Yard and look forward to ongoing discussions."
Harland & Wolff said its administration process would affect its holding company.
Buyers have been sought for its yards in Belfast, Arnish, Methil in Fife and Appledore in Devon.
Arnish first opened in 1974 and its previous owners have included BiFab.
