Parts of Eastbourne's seafront bandstand are to be closed to the public for essential maintenance work to be carried out.

About £700,000 will be spent on the historic structure, subject to planning permission being granted.

There will be no access via the middle and lower promenade until the works are complete but access via Grand Parade will remain open.

The work was delayed until after the summer to avoid disrupting the concert season.

The work will see better seating installed at the Grade II listed venue.

Opened in 1935, the bandstand has suffered the effects of decades of weather and sea air, with Eastbourne Borough Council planning £1.1m in restoration work.

In the long term, columns and supporting beams are expected to be replaced.
