At least three bonsai trees were stolen from a nursery during a burglary, the company which runs the site said.

Herons Bonsai, based near Lingfield, Surrey, said the valuable "major specimen" trees were stolen in a break-in on 23 October.

Peter Chan, the managing director at Herons Bonsai, said they have reported the offences to Surrey Police.

One of the stolen trees started its growth back in 1984 and was at Herons for restyling.

Another tree is a Chinese Elm, described as "massive" and was at the site for grooming.

Both of the trees are usually kept at RHS Wisley.

A third tree stolen was purchased by Mr Chan from Telford on 5 October.

Mr Chan has a high profile in the bonsai world and recently appeared on Gardeners' World.

Surrey Police has been approached for comment.
