A rusty grenade found on Cannock Chase has been destroyed.

The grenade was found at the weekend by a member of the public and the Army's bomb disposal unit was called to the scene, Staffordshire Police said.

It was identified as a Mills Bomb Grenade, used by the British military during both World Wars.

Despite its old, rusty appearance, the force said it could still have been dangerous.

The grenade was most likely left over from the days of RAF Hednesford, a training school based in the area from 1939 until the 1950s, officers added.

It was destroyed in a controlled explosion.
