A York housing estate has been cordoned off after police were called to a "serious incident".

About five police vehicles and several officers were in attendance at the scene in Bellfarm Avenue and Roche Avenue on Saturday morning.

Residents reported seeing a helicopter and up to 10 armed officers in the early hours.

North Yorkshire Police has asked the public to avoid the area, as crime scene investigators were expected to continue their work throughout the weekend.

Police guarding the cordon said those living on the estate were being allowed to enter and exit.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We understand that this may cause concern within the community and would like to thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work diligently to establish the facts.

"Further details will be provided as soon as we are able."
