Motorists have been warned of disruption as work gets under way to repair and resurface eight roads in Leicester.

Leicester City Council said it needed to fix street which had become pitted, cracked or broken due to wear and tear caused by traffic and winter weather.

The authority said there would be road closures, parking restrictions and diversions as part of the £317,500 programme.

The rolling roadworks began on Monday and are expected to be complete by the end of June, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Resurfacing work, lasting a day, started in Cotton Close, Rushey Mead, on Monday.

On Tuesday, Duncombe Road, in Beaumont Leys, was due shut for four days, the council said.

Frederick Road, in Spinney Hills, will close on Sunday for four days followed by a two-day closure of Samson Road, in Newfoundpool, on 13 June.

Work is planned in Gamel Road, Evington, for four days from 17 June, the council said.

The final closures will be in Knighton Fields Road East, and sections of Morris Road and Kingsley Street from 23 June, lasting six days.

'Essential repairs'

The city council said in total, almost 7,000 sq metres of carriageway would be repaired in total.

Martin Fletcher, city council’s director of highways, said the council would try to keep disruption to a minimum during the works.

He said: "Traffic and weather have a huge impact on the city’s road surfaces.

"This essential programme of repairs will help to ensure that our roads remain able to handle the demands that are placed on them for years to come."
