The work will affect southbound traffic heading towards Devizes

Drivers have been warned to expect delays as repair works take place on a major road.

Part of the A361, to the north of Devizes in Wiltshire, will be closed after an underground cable was damaged.

Work to repair the cable will lead to a southbound closure from 07:00 BST on Sunday 21 September to 06:00 BST on Monday 6 October.

Cllr Martin Smith, cabinet member for highways at Wiltshire Council, said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this southbound closure, but this essential work is necessary to maintain the safety and integrity of the A361."

The work, near Bishops Cannings, will involve resurfacing the carriageway where the road surface was damaged during work by National Grid and its contractor Balfour Beatty to install underground cables.

For vehicles travelling southbound into Devizes, a signposted diversion route will be in place. Northbound traffic will not be affected.

Mr Smith added: "We're working to minimise disruption as much as we can and ensure the road is restored to a high standard.

"We thank people for their patience and cooperation during this work."

To prevent HGVs from passing through Bishops Cannings, a 7.5 tonne - except for access - weight limit will be introduced along Chandlers Lane, from its junction with the A361 to Horton Road.

Wiltshire Council says pedestrian safety measures will also be in place in the village throughout the works, with a coned virtual walkway outside The Crown pub and temporary signs warning of pedestrians in the road.
