A mother and her two daughters have died after the car they were travelling in collided with a lorry in County Mayo.

Una Bowden, 47, and her daughters Ciara, 14, and nine-year-old Saoirse, were killed on the N17 in Castlegar, outside of Claremorris.

The crash happened at about 14:00 local time on Tuesday.

Their bodies were removed from the scene to Mayo University Hospital.

Gardaí (Irish police) said post mortem examinations were carried out on Wednesday morning.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ said the father and husband of the victims, who was understood to be working abroad, had been informed of the accident.

Arrangements are being made for him to return to Ireland.

Gardaí have asked the public not to share images of the crash on social media.

They have also appealed for anyone with information or dashcam footage from the collision to contact them.
