Two arrests after A453 crash causes serious injuries

Two people have been arrested following a serious crash in Nottingham.

Nottinghamshire Police said two cars, a Ford Fiesta and a BMW, collided at about 01:45 BST on Friday on the A453 outside Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton campus.

Two people, a passenger in the Ford and a passenger in the BMW, suffered injuries which are believed to be life-threatening.

A 50-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and a 19-year-old man on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and drink driving, said police.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area by the force, especially lorries, as they expect “significant traffic disruption” due to the incident.

The closure is in place between Green Lane and Farnborough Road.

National Highways has advised people to delay their journeys if possible, and public transport has been affected.

Nottingham City Transport has warned of delays on its 1, 4, 48 and 53 services, while Trent Barton said Skylink is unable to serve the Campus and Clifton Pastures stops.

Trent Barton has told passengers it expects the road to be closed until about 21:00.

Nottingham Trent University has rescheduled teaching activity on Clifton campus and asked people not to travel there.

Sgt Steve Waft thanked people for their patience and asked witnesses to make contact.

He said: “I appreciate the disruption that this incident will have caused, and I want to reassure motorists that we are working hard to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

“However, due to the extent of the collision, we are expecting the closure to remain in place for several hours while our inquiries are continuing, and we urge motorists to avoid the area if possible.”
