Parties contest redrawn Norfolk constituency
- Published
The newly-named Broadland and Fakenham constituency in Norfolk will be contested for the first time in this general election.
Its name may have changed, but has its politics?
Formerly just Broadland, it has only ever returned a Conservative MP since it was created in 2010.
Labour, the Greens, the Liberal Democrats and Reform UK are all competing against the incumbent Conservative, Jerome Mayhew.
Here is a list of candidates, in alphabetical order according to surname.
Jan Davis - Green Party
Public health engineer Mr Davis is a Broadland district councillor and said voters felt let down.
“People are fed up. They're disappointed, dismayed,” said the 70-year-old.
“They feel they should be living in a country which is looking after them in terms of health and wellbeing - and they are not being listened to.
“What people want is a secure, stable, sustainable life ahead that they can enjoy and it's about wellbeing and happiness and being kind to each other rather than divisive.”
Dr Leyla Hannbeck - Liberal Democrats
Dr Hannbeck, 46, said she was calling for a reform of NHS services to allow better access to GPs, dentists and social care.
“Everyone I speak with is completely disillusioned with the way things are going and people are saying 'enough is enough'," said Dr Hannbeck, who is a pharmacist.
“I know that Norfolk is one of the areas worst affected by people not being able to see a dentist or GP appointments.
“I’m here because I care, not because I want to make a career for myself in politics.
“It is because I've seen enough to know that things will have to change if we want to save our healthcare system.”
Eric Masters - Reform UK
Safety and health consultant Mr Masters said he would put the people of Broadland first.
“If I was elected MP, I would not be down Westminster, looking to where I could find my next junket and fact-finding trip to go on,” said the 62-year-old.
“I will be working for them. I will be standing up for them.
"And if I have to shout very loud at those people inside the House of Commons, I will do so.”
Jerome Mayhew - Conservatives
Mr Mayhew, 54, is hoping to defend the seat he first won in 2019.
He is hoping his record over the past four and a half years will convince voters to elect him again.
“I've worked really hard as a local MP to make myself available, to listen to what people say to me and then to reflect that in Westminster,” he said.
“And that's what you want from an MP I think, irrespective of the colour of their politics.
“You want someone who cares about the community, who gets involved, who makes themselves available and then fights the corner for Norfolk and in particular for Broadland.”
Iain Simpson - Labour
Mr Simpson stood for election in Broadland in 2017.
The 37-year-old, an economist, said he planned to tackle issues like sewage in the Broads as well as a lack of dentists and help people with the cost of living crisis.
“The last few years have been tough for everyone," he explained.
“There is a wider sense as well that some things just don't work as well as they used to.
“Together with the fact that taxes are basically the highest they have been since World War Two, I think there’s a lot of frustration.
“People feel that they are paying an awful lot of tax and public services don't quite work for them and that needs to change.”
