A former Roman Catholic church on land which has planning permission for a residential development could be demolished if the site is sold at auction.

The ex-Church of Christ the King, between the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and Bradford Road in Sandbeds, near Bingley, has been empty since it shut in 2006.

Last year, a planning application to knock down the church and build 13 houses on the site was submitted to Bradford Council by developer Chris Phillips.

The plot of land, including the church, is due to go under the hammer next Tuesday with a guide price of £700,000.

The planning permission, which allows a mix of housing ranging from two to five-bedroom homes was approved last month, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The auction listing highlights that the site is a short distance from Bingley and has consent to be turned into a housing development.

It adds: “A disused church currently occupies the site and will require demolition to make way for the street.”
