A motorcyclist who tried to "goad" officers into chasing him put people at risk, police have said.

Danny Carman, 23, of Donnington Park, Leverington, Cambridgeshire, was handed a suspended jail term after a judge heard how he smashed the wing mirror of a police van.

He had admitted a series of offences at a recent hearing in Peterborough Crown Court.

A court official said Carman had also been banned from driving for a year and ordered to complete 80 hours' unpaid work.

Police said Carman was captured on CCTV riding an orange KTM motorcross bike and following police in Churchill Road, Wisbech, on 14 January.

'Pulling wheelies'

"He tried to goad officers into a chase by making offensive hand gestures before taking off at speed towards the roundabout off Freedom Bridge, weaving in and out of traffic and pulling ‘wheelies’," said a police spokeswoman.

"Carman continued to follow the police van, before overtaking and punching and smashing the offside wing mirror."

Carman admitted dangerous driving, criminal damage, driving without insurance and driving without a licence at Peterborough Crown Court on 26 September.

A court official said he had been given an eight-month jail term, suspended for a year.

PC Jay Ede, who investigated, said on Wednesday: "Carman had no regard for others as he drove dangerously, putting not only himself, but other road users, at risk."
