Flat with woman inside set on fire in murder bid

A 21-year-old woman had to be rescued from a flat in South Ayrshire after it was set alight.

Police are treating the incident in Whiteford, Girvan, which happened at about 22:45 on Saturday, as attempted murder.

A member of the public forced entry to the property to get the woman out.

The male suspect was described as being in his late teens and wearing dark-coloured clothing and a black baseball cap. He was last seen running in the direction of Assel Place, Girvan.

Det Con Gill Wilson said: "This was a dangerous and completely reckless act.

"Luckily the woman was not injured, however, the consequences could have been much more serious.

"We are working to trace the person responsible as soon as possible and I urge anyone with information that may assist our investigation to please contact us, external.

"If you were in the area on Saturday evening and witnessed anything suspicious or have any details or footage that will help our inquiries, please come forward."
