A roundabout which gives priority to cyclists and pedestrians is being proposed for a West Sussex town - the second in the county.

Residents in Horsham are being invited to give feedback on plans for routes in the town centre, including a roundabout at the junctions of Parsonage Road and Kings Road.

So called-Dutch-style roundabouts were introduced in the UK five years ago with a cycle lane separated from the road around the edge and zebra crossings on each exit.

The first Dutch-style roundabout in Sussex was introduced in Chichester in February and was backed by many residents.

Councillor Joy Dennis, from West Sussex County Council, said: "These proposals are about making everyday travel easier and safer for everyone, whether you're walking, cycling, catching the bus or driving."

In addition to the roundabout the council is considering a range of measures, including bus priority features to reduce delays and road layout changes to improve safety and cut congestion.

Heavy traffic in the town causes regular congestion, noise and air pollution, affecting nearby communities and making walking, cycling and bus travel less appealing, according to the council.

Ms Dennis said: "We're committed to creating a transport network that works better for local people and supports sustainable travel."

The consultation closes on 22 December.
