A 17-year-old boy was arrested after an alleged bomb hoax at a school.

St Brendan's Sixth Form College in Bristol was evacuated when a member of staff called police just after 15:00 GMT on Tuesday.

Firearms officers, a dog unit and specialist search teams were sent to the school, where the teenager was arrested.

Avon and Somerset Police said all students and staff were safely evacuated and that the bomb threat was "not credible".

Officers from a local neighbourhood policing team visited the college on Wednesday to provide reassurance.

The police operation, which involved search dogs exploring parts of the school, ended just after 17:30 GMT on Tuesday.

Nearby Broomhill Road, which was closed earlier to allow emergency service vehicles through, was reopened.

Temporary neighbourhood chief inspector Rich Fear said: "On this occasion, we are pleased to confirm that the threat was not credible and there was never a bomb on college grounds. We can also confirm that no one has sustained any injuries.

"The call from the member of staff reporting the incident was with good intent and the right thing to do, given the information they had received.

"We would like to thank the staff and students for their patience and understanding while we responded to this incident.

"Enquiries are ongoing and we will continue to engage with the college throughout."
