A stretch of the A3 in Surrey will be fully closed for a weekend in January to allow for the installation of a pedestrian bridge.

The closure, south of junction 10 with the M25, is planned in both directions from 21:00 GMT on 17 January until 06:00 on 20 January.

National Highways said the Cockcrow Bridge would be the UK's first heathland green bridge, connecting the commons on either side and providing a safe corridor for wildlife.

The work is being carried out as part of a £317m project to improve junction 10, the busiest section of the M25, which sees more than 300,000 vehicles pass through each day.

Jonathan Wade, National Highways project manager, previously said the bridge, along with other planned projects, would help to reduce the number of short journeys motorists made and encourage them to "switch for a walk or cycle".

There are also plans to remove trees which were planted for timber either side of the A3 and replace them with native heathland.

On the weekend of 17 January, the A3 will be closed to the junction at Send for the B2215/A247.

Diversions will be in place, southbound via Cobham, Chessington, Great Bookham and Effingham, rejoining the A3 at Send and northbound via East Clandon, Effingham, Fetcham and onto the M25 towards Wisley.

Previous closures around junction 10 have seen the entire M25 closed, with two more full closures of the orbital road planned in spring 2025.
