Victorian cricket pavilion needs £50k in repairs

The pavilion, built in the late 1800s, is also used as an events venue

A cricket club is looking to raise at least £50,000 to repair their Victorian pavilion.

Built in the late 1800s, Trowbridge Cricket Club's pavilion in use daily, even during winter, but it needs a large amount of wood replacing every couple of decades.

Club chair Steve Wordley said the roof is also leaking and to fully overhaul that would cost £350,000, but the club is starting with the smaller amount for the woodwork.

"It's an absolutely beautiful building in an Elizabethan style. It's very important to the people of Trowbridge," said Mr Wordley.

He said the two-storey building - also used for events - was bequeathed to the townspeople by local wealthy landowners.

The wood on the front of the pavilion needs replacing every 25-30 years

"The state of the woodwork on the exteriors - it needs to be replaced every 25-30 years. At the moment, it's on 27 years and it's quite poor condition," Mr Wordley added.

The club has recently bought surrounds for four pillars, which cost £2,700.

Some have already started contacting the club asking how to help, including local businesses.

"Every penny is more than welcome" added Mr Wordley.
