Distracted driver jailed over cyclist's death

A distracted driver has been sentenced to six years in prison over the death of a cyclist in a crash in West Sussex.
David Breen, from Chichester, was cycling home from football when he was hit by a car on the A286 Main Road in Birdham at about 20:00 BST on 26 October, 2021.
Driver Terry Varndell, 37, had used his phone for texts and calls in the moments before he hit the 26-year-old, Sussex Police said.
At Portsmouth Crown Court, Varndell, of North Street, Portsmouth, was found guilty by a jury of causing death by dangerous driving.
He was disqualified from driving for eight years and must complete an extended test before he is allowed behind the wheel again.
Varndell, who was formerly a refuse worker, was also not insured to drive his Vauxhall Zafira, police added.
In a victim statement, Mr Breen's mother Anne, father Anthony, and brothers Shane and Anthony, said hearing the news was the “hardest day of our lives”.
They described Mr Breen as “funny, caring, ready with the banter, cheeky, lovable, and always on the go”.
'Justice'
Det Sgt Ian Foxton said: “Sadly, David never made it home that night, and his death has had a lasting impact on his family and loved ones.
“This case shows the pain and heartache that being distracted and driving dangerously can cause.
“We were determined to get justice for David’s family, and are pleased that a dangerous driver has been taken off our roads."
