The new technology should make bus travel cheaper and easier, the council said

A bus service has launched 'tap on, tap off' (TOTO) technology to make journeys easier.

All services by First Bus in Portsmouth will allow passengers to scan their contactless device - for example a bank card, smartphone or smartwatch.

The council said it meant people in Portsmouth, Fareham and Gosport would automatically pay the cheapest fares.

But child and Pompey Young Person tickets cannot use TOTO technology, and still need to be purchased online, from the driver, or the First bus app, the council said.

The technology was funded by the Portsmouth Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), a £48m government funded scheme.

The council said it will also ensure passengers never pay more than the daily or weekly cap, regardless of how many journeys they make.

Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, cabinet member for traffic and transportation, said the technology would make taking the bus "even more convenient".

Commercial director for First Bus South, James Eustace, said it gives customers "ultimate flexibility" and "ensures everyone automatically gets the best price for their journey".
