Two teenagers have died after the motorbike they were on crashed, police have said.

Durham Police said it happened on Middridge Road close to the Rushyford roundabout near Newton Aycliffe at about noon on Friday.

A force spokeswoman said it was "believed" the pair, who a local councillor said were aged 13 and 17, had been travelling on the same bike, with one pronounced dead at the scene and the other in hospital.

"Their families have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers," the force spokeswoman added.

An investigation has been launched and officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact them.

The road was closed for several hours before reopening on Friday evening.

Dorothy Bowman, of Great Aycliffe Town Council, said she knew the boys, who she said were aged 13 and 17, for years and "wouldn't hear a bad word" said about them.

"No-one deserves to die," Ms Bowman told the BBC.
