An art installation containing 20,000 fibre optic lights will mark the 200th anniversary of the RNLI.

Field of Light in Salcombe, Devon, has involved more than 300 volunteers.

The work by Bruce Munro will span 3.5 hectares (8.6 acres) and be visible from Salcombe waterfront.

Mr Munro said he hoped the installation, which opens on Saturday, would "inspire and create wonderment".

Free to view

The initial switch on will take place at 18:24 BST to symbolise the founding year of the RNLI.

The work is free to view but people can sponsor a light stem with all funds going to the charity.

Mr Munro, who grew up in Salcombe, said the artwork was his way "of saying thank you to our crews for their work".

Field of Light will run daily from dusk to 22:00 until 10 January.
