A major road was closed after Tarmac laid by road workers did not set "as quickly as anticipated".

The A1 was shut heading southbound between the Black Cat roundabout and Sandy in Bedfordshire.

National Highways said the overnight roadworks were supposed to be completed by 05:00 BST, but were delayed due to the road surface issue.

A diversion was put in place that took drivers along the A421 and A603, but people were advised to avoid the area and expect delays, external.

The road was reopened at about 08:10, although there were three miles of congestion in the area.
