A speeding drink-driver who caused the death of a passenger after crashing his car has been jailed for eight years.
Sharuyan Sasikumar was doing 82mph seconds before losing control of his Toyota CH-R on High Street, Knutton, Newcastle-under-Lyme on 25 September 2024, said Staffordshire Police.
The 23-year-old, from Dagenham, Essex, admitted causing the death of rear seat passenger Shejuti Pasha, 32, through dangerous driving, as well driving above the legal alcohol limit.
Sasikumar, who was sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, was also disqualified from driving for 11 years and four months.
'Innocent passenger'
Ms Pasha, who died in hospital after sustaining serious injuries in the crash, was described by her family as an inspiring writer.
"This was a totally avoidable collision if Sasikumar had just obeyed the law, driven within the speed limit and not driven under the influence of alcohol," said Sgt Rich Moors.
"Sadly, his decisions on that night led to the death of an innocent passenger in his car."

Shejuti Pasha, 32, was a rear seat passenger in Sasikumar's car when she was fatally injured in the crash
The officer, who works in the collision investigation unit, said the case should remind people of the dangers of irresponsible driving.
"Our thoughts remain with Shejuti's friends and family at this difficult time."
